CARIBBEAN AFFAIRSRawle Marshall -
Guyana’s First NBA Player
By Patrick Haynes
Rawle Junior Kalomo
Marshall (born February 20, 1982 in Georgetown, Guyana) is
an American basketball player. He is a 6 ft 7 in (200 cm)
and 190 lb (86 kg) swingman.
Early life: Not
selected during the 2005 NBA Draft, Marshall has
participated in several summer leagues (Southern California
Summer Pro League with the Memphis Grizzlies, Rocky Mountain
Revue with the Dallas Mavericks). His performances (18.6
points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 27.4 minutes per
game in the Rocky Mountain Revue) helped him sign a one-year
contract with the Dallas Mavericks on August 5, 2005.
Marshall spent his
college freshman season at Ball State University, while
moving to Oakland University for the final three collegiate
seasons. He was named Mid-Continent Conference's Newcomer
and Defensive Player of the Year during his sophomore season
(in 2002-03). During his senior season (in 2004-2005), he
helped Oakland University win its first Mid-Continent
Conference title. Marshall was named Most Valuable Player of
the tournament. His stats during his three years with
Oakland University were 18.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.2
steals and 1.1 blocks (Oakland University all-time
blocked-shot leader) in 90 games.
He graduated from
Mackenzie High School (Detroit, Michigan) where he was
salutatorian of his senior class.
NBA Career:
Marshall did not find the court much early in his rookie
season with the Mavericks. Instead, he was sent to the
developmental league team the Fort Worth Flyers, where he
averaged over 17 PPG. Since returning to the Dallas
Mavericks, he has started multiple games due to injuries to
Josh Howard, Adrian Griffin, and Devin Harris. While his
minutes have still been limited, he has surpassed the
expectations that surround an average undrafted rookie. He
did not make the Mavericks playoffs roster in 2005. On July
23, 2006, Marshall was traded to the Indiana Pacers, along
with Darrell Armstrong and Josh Powell, for Anthony Johnson.
He has a guaranteed contract for the 2006-07 season with the
Pacers.
